A New Delhi-based human rights organisation has reported a sharp rise in targeted violence against Hindu minorities in Bangladesh. It claims at least 15 members of the community were killed over 45 days, from December 1, 2025, to January 15, 2026.
The Rights and Risks Analysis Group (RRAG) said the killings, allegedly by members of the Muslim majority, amount to one Hindu murder every three days.
RRAG Director Suhas Chakma described the attacks as premeditated and often linked to the theft of victims’ assets.
The victims ranged from elderly women to young adults, including 18-year-old Shanta Chandra Das.
The group added that several killings were extremely brutal, including throat-slitting, and attackers seized vehicles such as auto-rickshaws after the murders.
Chakma said these incidents are only a fraction of the daily violence Hindus and other minorities face, much of which goes unreported.
The report criticised the interim government led by Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus for repeatedly dismissing religious motives behind the attacks. Investigations were often incomplete when these dismissals occurred.
RRAG alleged that the administration portrayed such incidents as misinformation. This included statements made during engagements with international bodies such as the United Nations.
The group warned that authorities could reframe attacks on Hindu minorities as routine political violence once election campaigning begins on January 22. It expressed concern that violence during the polls may be downplayed or mischaracterised, reducing accountability.
EU Observations and Minority Participation
RRAG highlighted recent remarks by the European Union Election Observation Mission, which called for inclusive and participatory elections for all religious and ethnic minorities.
It, however, argued that the current atmosphere of fear and violence may prevent Hindu minorities from participating freely. Authorities must formally recognise their security concerns.
The organisation urged international stakeholders, including the European Union, to engage with Bangladesh’s interim government. They should ensure minority protection and closely monitor violence during the election process.
