Junior doctors across West Bengal have called on President Droupadi Murmu to address ongoing issues following the tragic rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital last month. The appeal comes as part of a broader effort by the West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Forum (WBJDF) to seek justice and reform.
Request for Intervention and Investigation
In their email to President Murmu, also sent to Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda, the junior doctors detailed their concerns. They cited examples of alleged evidence tampering and widespread corruption within West Bengal’s medical system. The doctors expressed deep mistrust towards the authorities and requested immediate action to ensure a fair investigation and trial.
Demands for Improved Infrastructure and Safety
The doctors also highlighted deficiencies in hospital infrastructure, such as inadequate lighting, poor security, and malfunctioning locks. They noted that women, in particular, face additional vulnerabilities due to the lack of proper facilities like changing rooms and dedicated washrooms. The appeal stressed the need for better grievance redressal mechanisms and improved safety measures in medical colleges.
President Murmu had previously condemned the incident, emphasizing the need for honest self-introspection and societal change to ensure women’s safety.
