Reservations Finalised, Seats Unknown: Mayor, Municipality & Panchayat Election

Nikay Chunav: According to Urban Development Minister AK Sharma, there will be elections for 17 mayor positions this time around. Elections for 16 seats were held in 2017. In Shahjahanpur, an election will be held for the first time.

The final notification for the reservation of the mayor and chairman seats in municipal bodies has been released by the UP government. This announcement was made by the government for 760 of the 762 available seats. In addition to the mayor’s position in 17 municipal corporations, they also include the chairmanships of 544 nagar panchayats and 199 municipal councils.

8 of the 17 municipal corporations, according to the Uttar Pradesh government, have been set aside for the general category. Two will be set aside for scheduled caste, two for backward caste, and one for a scheduled caste lady out of the remaining.

For the first time, elections will be held for 17 seats as mayor.

According to AK Sharma, the state’s minister of urban development, elections would be held this time for 17 mayorships. Elections for 16 seats were held in 2017. In Shahjahanpur, an election will be held for the first time. Eight seats have been left vacant out of the mayor’s 17 municipal corporations, while three seats have been set aside for women.

In addition, 2 seats have been set aside for women from the lower classes and 2 seats for additional women from the lower classes. For scheduled caste women and scheduled castes, 1-1 seats have also been set aside. Accordingly, 9 seats have been set aside for women from scheduled castes, 18 seats are for scheduled castes, 18 seats are for backward class women, and 36 seats are for backward classes, out of the 200 seats in Municipal Councils. While the unreserved category has 40 and 79 seats designated for women.

In Nagar Panchayats, there are 545 seats total, 217 of which are designated for women and 107 unreserved. In addition, 98 seats have been set aside for members of the underprivileged class, 49 for underprivileged women, 48 for members of the scheduled caste, and 25 for members of the scheduled caste women. While one seat is set aside for a woman from a Scheduled Tribe.

According to Minister AK Sharma, the final reservation notification has a seven-day objection period. After resolving the objections, the final notification will be sent out. The State Election Commission will receive the information following the issuance of the final notification of seat and ward reservations. He promised that by December 12 the government would have finished the project.
