A massive rescue operation is underway to save a three-year-old boy trapped nearly 70 feet deep inside a borewell in Jhalariya village, around 75 km from Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh.
The child, identified as Bhagirath Dewasi, fell into the borewell on Thursday evening while his family was grazing sheep in the area.
According to family members, a sheep accidentally displaced the stone covering the borewell, prompting the child to look inside before slipping into the shaft.
Bhagirath, the youngest of three siblings, is the son of Praveen Dewasi, a shepherd from Rajasthan’s Pali district.
The family had arrived in the region just days earlier. His mother witnessed the incident but could not prevent the fall, while his father was away at the time.
Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have launched a coordinated rescue operation, using heavy machinery and specialised equipment to reach the child.
Authorities are monitoring the boy with a camera and supplying oxygen, while rescue teams dig a parallel pit despite delays due to hard rock. They have deployed heavy equipment and are working to pull the child out using a rescue ring and rope.
Senior officials are supervising the operation, as concern grows locally and efforts continue to ensure a safe rescue, highlighting the need for stricter borewell safety measures.
