Republic Day 2023: Droupadi Murmu unfurled the national flag at Kartavya Path on Thursday to start off the 74th Republic Day celebrations.
The national anthem and the usual 21-gun salute were performed after the unfurling of the Tricolour, as is customary. Notably, the 21 Gun Salute using 105mm Indian Fields Guns was performed for the first time. It took the place of the old 25-pounder weapon.
The Ceremonial Battery of the 871 Field Regiment fired the Gun Salute. Lieutenant Colonel Vikas Kumar, SM, led the Ceremonial Battery. Nasib Subedar and Anoop Singh held the role of Gun.
During Republic Day, Independence Day, and foreign head of state visits, the 21-gun salute is performed.
PM Narendra Modi greeted the President when she arrived at Kartavya Path. The National Anthem was played when the National Flag was raised at Kartvya Path by an Air Force officer, Flt Lt Komal Rani. The 21 Gun Salute was then offered to the President.
The president’s bodyguard earlier led President Murmu out from her home on their bay and dark bay-colored horses. The Indian Army’s senior-most Regiment is the president’s Bodyguard.

This year’s Republic Day is unique since “The President’s Bodyguard” completed 250 years since its raising in Varanasi in 1773.
Colonel Anup Tiwari, the Commandant of the President’s Bodyguard, rode to the right of the President’s Car, leading this distinguished group of horsemen on his glorious charger.
Lt Col Ramakant Yadav, the Second-in-Command of the Regiment, was mounted on his charger Sultan and was standing to the left of the President’s Car. It is the senior-most cavalry regiment that serves the president by performing mounted ceremonial responsibilities.
