Remal strengthened into a powerful cyclonic storm, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), and it is expected to make landfall between the shores of Bangladesh and West Bengal by Sunday midnight.
The Kolkata airport said that flight operations would be suspended for 21 hours starting at midday on Sunday due to Remal’s landfall.
Additionally, officials said that starting Sunday evening, all cargo and container handling activities at Kolkata’s Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port will be suspended for 12 hours.
According to officials, there will also be no train operations in the port region during that period.
The sky of West Bengal was found smoky by the people as they woke up on Sunday.
As per IMD, along with the West Bengal other states like Nagaland, Manipur, Tripura Assam and Bihar may witness rainfall and strong winds.
The districts of Madhepura, Banka, Jamui, Khagaria, Muzaffarpur, Vaishali, Samastipur, Purnea, Araria, Supaul, Katihar, Kishanganj, Bhagalpur, Munger, Sitamarhi, Sheohar, Darbhanga, and Madhubani in Bihar are expected to receive rains, according to the Met Department’s prediction.
According to the IMD, on May 26 and 27, the weather system will deliver heavy to extremely heavy rain to the West Bengal districts of South and North 24 Parganas, Purba Medinipur, Kolkata, Howrah, and Hooghly.
On May 26 and 27, it will also have an effect on north Odisha. On May 27 and 28, extremely high precipitation is predicted in some areas of northeast India.
According to IMD, there will probably be a lot of rain on May 26 and 27 in the districts of Paschim Medinipur, Purba Bardhaman, and Nadia. It has been recommended that fishermen hold off on going out to sea until May 26.
