Former BSP MP Afzal Ansari, who lost his Parliament membership after being sentenced for 4 years in a gangster case, has got a big relief from the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court has put an interim stay on the conviction of Afzal Ansari. The apex court ordered that High Court should give its decision in the case by June 30, 2024. At the same time, the Supreme Court also said that at present there will be no by-election on Ghazipur seat. Now they can use the money received through MP Lad Scheme.
Had demanded Supreme Court to suspend the conviction
Let us tell you that Afzal Ansari is the brother of Mukhtar Ansari. In his petition, Afzal Ansari had demanded the Supreme Court to suspend his conviction in the 2007 Gangster Act case. Citing Rahul Gandhi’s case, Afzal had sought to stay his conviction as well.
Abhishek Manu Singhvi had made this appeal to the court
During the hearing in the Supreme Court, lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi, appearing on behalf of former MP Ansari, had said that the court should look at every aspect of the case. Because if his conviction is not suspended, his Ghazipur constituency will become without representation in the Lok Sabha. Afzal was a member of various standing committees of Parliament, when he will no longer be an MP, he will not be able to contribute there.
Let us tell you that on April 29 this year, the special MP/MLA court of Ghazipur had convicted Afzal Ansari and his brother Mukhtar Ansari in the Gangster Act 2007 case.
