Raksha Bandhan celebrates the bond of love, affection and protection between brothers and sisters.
The festival is observed on Purnima, the full moon day of the Hindu month of Shravana, and is traditionally celebrated in August.
During the celebrations, sisters tie rakhis around their brothers’ wrists and pray for their happiness, prosperity and well-being.
Brothers, in turn, express their affection by offering gifts and pledging to support their sisters through life’s ups and downs.
Families follow traditional rituals, including applying a tilak on brothers’ foreheads and exchanging sweets and gifts.
People primarily celebrate the festival in India and Nepal, where it holds significance as an occasion that strengthens family bonds, affection and mutual trust.
As people celebrate Raksha Bandhan this year, PM Modi’s message highlighted the enduring emotional bond represented by the rakhi and the values of love, affection and trust it carries.
