On Monday, the Rajya Sabha convened briefly to pay tribute to veteran leader Shibu Soren, who passed away earlier in the day at the age of 81.
Deputy Chairman Harivansh announced the news with a heavy heart, acknowledging the passing of one of India’s most respected tribal leaders and parliamentarians.
Affectionately known as ‘Guruji’ or ‘Dishom Guruji’ across Jharkhand, Soren’s influence transcended party lines and regions.
The Deputy Chairman noted that Soren’s contribution to the creation of Jharkhand and his enduring commitment to tribal welfare will remain a landmark in India’s political history.
Soren’s parliamentary journey was both long and impactful, having served eight terms in the Lok Sabha and three in the Rajya Sabha, including his current tenure.
Known for his deep-rooted connection with the tribal population, he was celebrated for bringing their concerns to the national stage.
Harivansh remarked that Soren was ‘a voice for the voiceless’ who tirelessly championed the causes of the poor and marginalised.
Tributes and Silence
After the announcement of his demise, the Upper House observed a moment of silence as a mark of respect.
The mood in the House reflected the deep loss felt by leaders across the political spectrum.
The Deputy Chairman directed the Secretary-General to formally convey the House’s condolences to Soren’s family.
Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi had admitted Shibu Soren in June 2025, where doctors treated him for kidney-related ailments and complications arising from a stroke.
Despite being on life support for several weeks, he passed away at 8:56 AM on August 4. His passing signifies the end of an era for Jharkhand politics and the tribal movement he helped lead.
Soren’s legacy includes not only the formation of Jharkhand in 2000 but also the institutional recognition of tribal rights and identity within the Indian Union.
The Rajya Sabha adjourned till Tuesday to honour his memory.
The adjournment allows members time to reflect on the life of a statesman whose political journey inspired generations and changed the course of tribal politics in India.
