The Lok Sabha witnessed noisy scenes after Ravi Shankar Prasad questioned the conduct and responsibilities of the Leader of the Opposition during a debate.
Prasad targeted Rahul Gandhi, who currently serves as the Leader of the Opposition. His remarks triggered protests from Opposition members and disrupted proceedings.
During the debate, Prasad criticised Gandhi’s statements in Parliament and his remarks during overseas visits. Referring to Congress leader KC Venugopal, he said Gandhi needed guidance on how a Leader of the Opposition should conduct himself in the House.
Ravi Shankar Prasad also objected to Gandhi’s reference to what he described as an ‘unpublished memoir’ of a former Army Chief.
Opposition MPs protested the remark and raised slogans in the House.
Responding to the criticism, Gandhi defended himself and said members had made several misleading claims about him.
“Wild things have been said about me,” Gandhi said during the debate.
He added that Parliament represents the collective voice of the people and not just the ruling party.
“The House represents the people of India, not one party. Every time we stand up to speak, we are stopped,” he said.
Rahul Gandhi also said he had earlier raised a fundamental question about alleged compromises made by the Prime Minister.
Prasad rejected the allegation and defended PM Narendra Modi, saying the Prime Minister of India could never be compromised.
The exchange took place during a debate on a motion seeking the removal of Om Birla as Lok Sabha Speaker.
During his speech, Ravi Prasad cited past parliamentary precedents. He recalled the ‘cash-for-questions’ case during the UPA-1 government, when the BJP protested what it described as unfair conduct in the House.
