Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to announce a Special Relief Package for states ravaged by floods, highlighting the dire situation in Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Jammu & Kashmir.
In a message posted on social media platform X, Gandhi stressed the urgent need for central government assistance to support families devastated by the disaster.
“Modi Ji, the floods in Punjab have caused devastating destruction. The situation in Jammu-Kashmir, Himachal, and Uttarakhand is also extremely worrying,” he wrote.
He further urged the Centre to prioritise relief measures for farmers and expedite rescue operations. Gandhi also released a video message, stating, “In such difficult times, your attention and the active help of the central government are extremely necessary. Thousands of families are struggling to save their homes, lives, and loved ones.”

Widespread Damage Reported
The floods, triggered by incessant rainfall and cloudbursts, have wreaked havoc across northern India. Officials in Punjab have reported at least 29 deaths and displaced thousands of residents, calling it one of the worst floods in recent memory.
Villages remain submerged, and emergency services are stretched thin as they attempt to rescue stranded citizens. Himachal Pradesh has reported collapsed roads, disrupted power supply and large-scale infrastructure losses.
Meanwhile, in Uttarakhand and Jammu & Kashmir, flash floods and landslides have caused casualties and left several people missing, compounding the crisis.
Rahul Gandhi’s call for central action comes as state administrations struggle to cope with the magnitude of the disaster. While local authorities continue to lead relief and evacuation efforts, political leaders are pressing the Union government to step in with financial aid and logistical support.
Observers note that natural disasters of this scale often bring sharp scrutiny of government preparedness and response.
With the monsoon season still active, authorities remain on high alert for further rainfall that could worsen the crisis in already vulnerable regions.
