Radheshyam Bishnoi Builds 50+ Reservoirs In Rajasthan Desert To Quench Wildlife’s Thirst

Radheshyam Bishnoi, a resident of Pokhran, Rajasthan, has transformed the desert’s dry land into a lifeline for wildlife. He has built more than 50 reservoirs to ensure that no wild animal remains thirsty.

His journey, which started with just 1 liter of water in 2018, has now reached 10,000 liters.

Bishnoi developed a passion for rescuing injured wildlife from a young age. When he learned that the Great Indian Bustard faced extinction, he resolved to protect it.

After completing his 10th grade, he patrolled forests day and night to safeguard wildlife from human threats.

Initially, many rescued animals died due to a lack of proper treatment.

To address this, Bishnoi trained at Jodhpur’s Forest Rescue Center in first aid and wildlife treatment.

In 2015, he launched a campaign to monitor railway tracks, high-tension wires, and road accidents affecting the Great Indian Bustard.

During this time, he realized that many animals died in summer due to water scarcity.

To solve this, he used his earnings to arrange for water tankers.

In 2018, he built his first reservoir. Today, his reservoirs supply 10,000 liters of water, benefiting wildlife across the region.

Wildlife Conservation In Rajasthan Gets A Major Boost

Bishnoi’s reservoirs have helped not only the Great Indian Bustard but also Chinkara, Nilgai, and other wildlife.

The mortality rate of chinkara, which was 10-12 per day, has dropped to 1-2 per month. The population of the Great Indian Bustard is also showing signs of improvement.

The Bishnoi community has joined the movement, actively cleaning and refilling the reservoirs.

Bishnoi has also fought against poaching. He has registered more than 50 cases and played a role in jailing over 300 poachers.

Now, he plans to protect the eggs of the Great Indian Bustard, which lays only one egg per year.

Since survival rates are low, he hopes his efforts will increase the bird’s population.

Building water sources in the desert seemed impossible, but Bishnoi’s dedication made it a reality.

His work has turned wildlife conservation in Rajasthan into a model for others. He continues to inspire people across the country with his commitment to protecting nature.
