Sam Pitroda, whose controversial remarks sparked a political uproar during the Lok Sabha elections, has resigned as Chairman of the Indian Overseas Congress. The Congress party distanced itself from Pitroda’s comments, which were widely criticized.

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh confirmed Pitroda’s resignation, stating that Pitroda made the decision voluntarily and it was accepted by Congress President. Pitroda’s comments, made in an interview with ‘The Statesman’, were seized upon by BJP leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who used them to target the Congress.

In the interview, Pitroda reflected on India’s diversity, stating, “We could hold a country together as diverse as India, where people in the East look like Chinese, people in the West look like Arab, people in the North look like white and maybe people in the South look like Africans.” He emphasized the importance of respecting different languages, religions, food, and customs across regions.

However, Jairam Ramesh condemned Pitroda’s remarks as “most unfortunate and unacceptable,” asserting that the Indian National Congress dissociates itself from such analogies. BJP leaders slammed Pitroda for his “racist” comments, with PM Modi demanding an explanation from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.

During his election rallies, PM Modi criticized Pitroda’s remarks, stating that insulting people based on skin color is unacceptable. He referenced President Droupadi Murmu, highlighting her reputation and Adivasi background, while questioning the Congress’s efforts to defeat her. PM Modi accused Pitroda of guiding Rahul Gandhi and making derogatory remarks about people’s skin color.

PM Modi stressed that regardless of skin color, all Indians worship Lord Krishna, condemning attempts to divide the country along racial lines. The controversy surrounding Pitroda’s comments underscores the sensitivity of issues related to diversity and inclusivity in Indian politics.

Pitroda’s resignation marks a significant development in the aftermath of his controversial remarks, highlighting the political ramifications of statements made during election season. The episode serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible discourse in public life, particularly on issues related to identity and diversity.
