Punjab Police Officer Fatally Assaulted While Intervening In Restaurant Bill Dispute

Tragically, in Barnala, Punjab, a police officer, Head Constable Darshan Singh, lost his life during a distressing incident last night. The confrontation occurred when a dispute over an unpaid bill for food and drinks erupted between a restaurant owner and four kabaddi players. The restaurant owner, unable to resolve the issue, sought police assistance, leading to Head Constable Singh’s involvement.

According to eyewitness Sarabjit Singh, the four kabaddi players initially enjoyed drinks at the restaurant but later refused to settle their bill, triggering a confrontation. In response, the police, including Mr. Singh and his colleagues, arrived at the scene to mediate.

When attempts to resolve the issue peacefully failed, the police made the decision to detain the kabaddi players and asked them to board their vehicle. Tragically, it was at this point that the accused individuals reportedly attacked Head Constable Singh, causing him to fall and suffer a critical head injury. He was rushed to the civil hospital by a colleague, where he succumbed to his injuries. Subsequently, the assailants vandalized the restaurant before fleeing the scene.

Head Constable Singh, who had been serving at the City 1 police station for an extended period, has left the local community in a state of tension and mourning. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann expressed his deep regret over the incident and assured that the culprits would be swiftly apprehended and brought to justice. Furthermore, he pledged a financial aid of ₹1 crore to the police officer’s grieving family.
