On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his greetings on the occasion of the Parsi New Year, celebrated on 15 August, and praised the Parsi community for its lasting contributions to India’s development and progress.
Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “Warm wishes on the commencement of the Parsi New Year! We are all proud of the enduring contributions of Parsis to our nation. May this year bring happiness, prosperity and good health to all. Navroz Mubarak!”
President Droupadi Murmu conveyed her greetings to the community a day earlier, emphasising its significant role in shaping the nation.
Taking to X, she posted, “On the auspicious occasion of the Parsi New Year Navroz, I extend my heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to all countrymen, especially to Parsi brothers and sisters.”
Parsi New Year, or Navroz, is traditionally a celebration of spring and renewal. The term comes from Persian, with ‘Nav’ meaning new and ‘Roz’ meaning day.
While globally it coincides with the March equinox, Indian Parsis follow the Shahenshahi calendar, observing the festival in July or August.
The festival traces its roots to Prophet Zarathustra, the founder of Zoroastrianism, one of the earliest monotheistic religions.
Originating in ancient Persia (modern-day Iran), the faith flourished before the rise of Islam in the seventh century.
In India today, Navroz is celebrated with devotion, reflecting values of unity, renewal, and cultural heritage. The festival also serves as a reminder of the Parsi community’s remarkable contributions to the country.
