Prime Minister Narendra Modi honored the life and legacy of Shashikant Ruia, the co-founder of the Essar Group, describing him as a “colossal figure” in the business world. Ruia passed away on Tuesday at the age of 81.

In a heartfelt tribute posted on X, PM Modi lauded Ruia for his visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to excellence. “Shri Shashikant Ruia Ji was a colossal figure in the world of industry. His visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to excellence transformed the business landscape of India,” Modi wrote. He also acknowledged Ruia’s dedication to innovation and growth, praising his continuous drive for progress.

Condolences And Tributes

PM Modi expressed his condolences, calling Ruia’s death deeply saddening. “Shashi Ji’s demise is deeply saddening. My deepest condolences to his family and loved ones in this hour of grief. Om Shanti,” he added.

The Ruia and Essar Family also issued a statement mourning his passing. “It is with profound grief that we inform of the passing of Shri Shashikant Ruia, Patriarch of the Ruia and Essar Family,” they said, acknowledging his far-reaching impact. The family highlighted his dedication to community upliftment and philanthropy, noting that he had touched millions of lives.

A Legacy Of Innovation And Leadership

Shashikant Ruia’s entrepreneurial journey began in 1965 under the guidance of his father, Nand Kishore Ruia. He co-founded the Essar Group, which grew into a global conglomerate with interests spanning multiple industries, generating annual revenues of $14 billion.

Known for his innovative thinking, Ruia was deeply involved in key business and diplomatic forums. He served as a member of the Prime Minister’s Indo-US CEO Forum, the India-Japan Business Council, and was the Chairman of the Indo-US Joint Business Council. Additionally, he held leadership roles such as the former president of the Indian National Shipowners Association.

Final Tributes And Continued Legacy

The Essar Group announced that Ruia’s mortal remains would be kept at Ruia House for prayers, allowing friends, family, and colleagues to pay their respects.
