On the occasion of Police Commemoration Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the valor and dedication of police personnel who have served selflessly to safeguard the nation.
Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “Today, on Police Commemoration Day, we honour the bravery and sacrifice of our police personnel. Their unwavering dedication ensures the safety of our people. They exemplify courage and determination. Their proactive efforts and assistance during humanitarian challenges are equally commendable.”

Earlier in the day, Union Home Minister Amit Shah addressed a gathering that included senior officers, retired police personnel, and the families of officers. He assured that we will never forget the sacrifices of those who lost their lives in the line of duty.
Shah stated, “We (our security forces) have controlled terrorist activities in Jammu and Kashmir over the past decade, but the battle is not over. We remain committed to completely eliminating terrorism, drug trafficking, and other anti-India activities.”
Highlighting the profound sacrifices made by police forces, Shah revealed that a staggering 36,468 police personnel have lost their lives while serving the country.
He added that this significant sacrifice has been a cornerstone of India’s progress and development. In the past year alone, 216 police personnel lost their lives in the line of duty.
Police Commemoration Day
Observed annually on 21 October, Police Commemoration Day serves as a solemn tribute to police martyrs, with the main ceremony traditionally led by the Union Home Minister at the National Police Memorial.
Shah asserted, “Today we all have gathered to pay tribute to the brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives to protect the internal security of the country and the borders of the country. These soldiers are protecting the borders of the country from Kashmir to Kanyakumari and from Kutch to Kibithu.”
The day also featured a joint parade showcasing the Central Armed Police Forces alongside the Delhi Police, further honoring those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
This commemorative day marks the remembrance of ten policemen who were ambushed by heavily armed Chinese troops at Hot Springs in Ladakh on 21 October 1959, symbolizing the courage and commitment of all police martyrs who have given their lives in service to the nation.
