The incident took place in the early hours on the Lakhtar–Viramgam highway in Surendranagar district, when a speeding dumper truck rammed into a group of pilgrims walking along the roadside. The victims were part of a religious procession travelling on foot towards a temple.
According to officials, the group belonged to the Bharwad community and had set out from Gadhka village in Rajkot district. They were heading towards Viramgam for religious rituals, including a flag-hoisting ceremony.
Police said seven members of the same family lost their lives on the spot, including five women and two men. Several others sustained serious injuries and were rushed to a nearby government hospital for treatment.
Eyewitnesses reported that the truck was moving at high speed and did not slow down before hitting the pedestrians. Some accounts suggested that a vehicle had halted along the roadside at the time, and the pilgrims were walking nearby when the collision occurred.
Emergency services reached the location soon after the crash, and the victims were shifted for medical care and post-mortem procedures.
Officials have registered a case against the truck driver, who fled after the accident. An investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the crash.
