President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday expressed grief over the demise of former Uttarakhand Chief Minister Major General (Retd) Bhuwan Chandra Khanduri, remembering his contributions to public service, governance and national development.
President Murmu described the news as ‘extremely heartbreaking’ and said Khanduri would always be remembered for his honest, transparent and development-oriented politics after an exemplary career in the Indian Army.

Born on October 1, 1934, in Dehradun, Khanduri served in the Corps of Engineers of the Indian Army from 1954 to 1990 and participated in the 1971 India-Pakistan War. He received the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) in 1982 for distinguished service.
Khanduri entered politics during the Ram Mandir movement in the 1990s and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. He represented the Garhwal constituency multiple times in Parliament and later served as Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways under former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
Maj Gen BC Khanduri served two terms as Uttarakhand Chief Minister and earned recognition for his anti-corruption measures and transparent governance. He passed away at Max Hospital after a prolonged illness.
