President Droupadi Murmu accepted the resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Tuesday, effective immediately.
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) received the resignation letter and is expected to issue an official notification soon.
Deputy Chairman and BJP MP Ghanshyam Tiwari, who chaired the Rajya Sabha session, announced the acceptance of Dhankhar’s resignation.
Tiwari stated, “The MHA has conveyed the resignation of Vice President of India Jagdeep Dhankhar under Article 67A of the Constitution with immediate effect.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi publicly acknowledged Dhankhar’s resignation via a post on the social media platform.
Taking to X, he posted, “Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar Ji has got many opportunities to serve our country in various capacities, including as the Vice President of India. Wishing him good health.”
His message came amidst mounting opposition queries regarding the timing of Dhankhar’s departure.
Dhankhar, who assumed office in August 2022, tendered his resignation on 21 July—the first day of Parliament’s Monsoon Session—explicitly citing health concerns.
In his letter to President Murmu, he invoked Article 67(a) of the Constitution in his resignation, marking the commencement of the formal process to fill the vacancy.
Nominated by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in July 2022, Dhankhar won the vice‑presidential election on 6 August 2022, defeating opposition candidate Margaret Alva with 528 out of 710 valid votes—a margin of 74.37%, the highest since 1992.
As Vice President, he presided over the Rajya Sabha as its ex‑officio Chairman.
Renowned for his strict enforcement of parliamentary rules and his uncompromising stance, Dhankhar earned both respect and criticism across the political spectrum.
Doctors hospitalised Dhankhar multiple times over the past year due to health issues, most recently in Nainital, although they have not disclosed the exact nature of his illness.
With the post vacated, constitutional experts confirm that the process to elect a new Vice President—or Rajya Sabha Chairman—has formally begun.
Given the importance of the office in parliamentary proceedings, the vacancy cannot remain unfilled for long.
This development brings to an end Jagdeep Dhankhar’s tenure as Vice President and sets the stage for a swift electoral process to ensure the continuing function of India’s legislative framework.
