President Droupadi Murmu will deliver an address to the nation on Thursday evening, on the eve of India’s 79th Independence Day.

The speech will air at 7 PM on Akashvani’s national network, and all Doordarshan channels will telecast it, first in Hindi and then in English.

Doordarshan’s regional channels will subsequently carry versions in regional languages, while Akashvani will air regional broadcasts at 9:30 PM on their respective networks, according to a government statement.

On Friday morning, 15 August, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will give his customary Independence Day address from the ramparts of the Red Fort.

Independence Day, observed annually on 15 August to mark India’s liberation from more than 200 years of British colonial rule in 1947. The day features flag-hoisting ceremonies, cultural performances, and tributes to the nation’s freedom fighters.

While past celebrations have been tied to official themes such as unity, patriotism, social development, and sacrifice, no theme has been announced so far this year.

Pre-Independence Day Events

In the run-up to the occasion, several iconic sites in Delhi have hosted live performances by bands from the Armed Forces, Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), Railway Protection Force (RPF), and National Cadet Corps (NCC). These events aim to stir patriotic sentiment while showcasing music, discipline, and coordination.

Security forces have strengthened arrangements in the capital and imposed traffic restrictions around India Gate, Mandi House, and Mathura Road.

Officials have advised vehicles without parking permits to steer clear of these routes to ease congestion.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has also announced special operations for 15 August, with services beginning at 4 AM on all lines to accommodate guests, invitees, and the public attending the Red Fort ceremony.

Trains will run every 30 minutes until 6 AM, after which the normal timetable will resume.
