Both leaders emphasised that Christmas transcends religious boundaries and offers universal lessons relevant to contemporary times.

Significance and Spirit of Christmas

Celebrated annually on December 25, Christmas marks the birth of Jesus Christ and symbolises hope, forgiveness, love and peace.

While rooted in Christian faith, the festival has evolved into a global celebration embraced by people from diverse cultural and religious backgrounds.

Across the world, Christmas brings families together and encourages acts of kindness and generosity. Traditions such as decorating Christmas trees, exchanging gifts, singing carols and participating in community gatherings reflect the spirit of togetherness and goodwill.

Historically, December 25 was chosen by early Christians to coincide with winter festivals observed in ancient Rome, such as Saturnalia.

By the 4th century, Christmas gained formal recognition as a Christian festival. Over time, regional customs blended with religious practices, shaping the celebrations seen today.

In modern times, Christmas stands not only as a religious observance but also as a cultural festival promoting universal values of love, peace and mutual respect across communities worldwide.
