In a breakthrough, police in Prayagraj have arrested Mukesh Kumar, 29, accused of raping and murdering a 10-year-old girl. The accused was identified through a pair of slippers found at the crime scene in Ganganagar area.
According to authorities, the girl’s body was discovered in a field on October 4, with no clothing on her body. An investigation was launched, and the slippers led police to Mukesh Kumar, a resident of Soraon, who has a history of drug addiction.
After fleeing his home eight days ago, Mukesh was tracked down by police on Tuesday night near the Judapur highway. When confronted, he opened fire and attempted to escape, but was shot in the leg by police.

During interrogation, Mukesh confessed to the heinous crime, revealing chilling details. He allegedly lured the girl onto his bicycle, promising to drop her at a nearby Durga Pandal, but instead took her to a field where he brutally assaulted and murdered her.
The postmortem report exposed the severity of the violence inflicted on the young victim, with both hands broken and seven injury marks found on her body.
Mukesh has been hospitalized, and a pistol was recovered from the encounter site. DCP Ganganagar Kuldeep Gunawat confirmed Mukesh’s confession and the recovery of the girl’s earring from his pocket.
This arrest brings some closure to the community, but the incident highlights the urgent need for increased safety measures to protect vulnerable individuals, particularly children, from such heinous crimes.
