The Centre has increased the onion procurement price under its buffer stock programme to Rs 16.50 per kg from Rs 15.80 per kg, effective June 13, 2026, to ensure better remuneration for farmers and strengthen market intervention efforts.
Union Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi announced the revision through a post on X. He raised the MAPP to Rs 1,650 per quintal. He based the revision on mandi rates and storage-grade onion quality.
“The pricing methodology has also been refined to make procurement more responsive to market conditions,” the Minister stated.
Joshi chaired a review meeting on Thursday to strengthen onion procurement and boost farmers’ returns.

The government maintains onion buffer stocks annually through the Price Stabilisation Fund (PSF) to facilitate timely market intervention and price management.
For 2026-27, the Centre has fixed a procurement target of 2 lakh tonnes, compared with 3 lakh tonnes procured during 2025-26.
Earlier, the government revised the procurement price to Rs 15.80 per kg from Rs 12.70 per kg in response to changing market dynamics.
Official estimates show onion production at 307.37 lakh tonnes in 2025-26, marginally lower than 307.67 lakh tonnes recorded in 2024-25.
Union Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan recently reiterated that agriculture remains the backbone of India’s economy and farmers its foundation. He emphasised the government’s commitment to raising farm incomes, improving living standards and ensuring nutrition security.
Addressing price declines in crops such as onion, potato and tomato, Chouhan highlighted the Management Information System (MIS), under which governments compensate farmers for the gap between model and market prices. He also announced transport subsidies for state agencies moving agricultural produce from production centres to major urban markets.
