The Government of India has strengthened nutrition governance under POSHAN Abhiyaan by deploying digital tools such as the Poshan Tracker Application, enabling near real-time monitoring of over 14 lakh Anganwadi Centres and nearly 9 crore beneficiaries nationwide.
As the programme completes eight years, its Jan Andolan approach has mobilised large-scale community participation through initiatives like Poshan Maah and Poshan Pakhwada, generating more than 150 crore engagement activities.
The mission reflects a growing emphasis on convergence, technology-enabled administration, and citizen involvement to address nutritional challenges effectively.
Authorities have reinforced coordination across sectors, recognising that integrated action and improved service delivery platforms remain essential for achieving measurable outcomes.
The transition to Mission Poshan 2.0 further underscores the commitment to improving service quality, expanding early childhood care, and strengthening last-mile delivery mechanisms.
The programme adopts a comprehensive framework by linking nutrition with healthcare, early childhood development, education, and grassroots participation, thereby supporting vulnerable populations.
Launched in 2018, POSHAN Abhiyaan marked a strategic shift from welfare-centric interventions to recognising nutrition as a national priority tied to human capital development, Sustainable Development Goals, and long-term economic growth. It unified efforts of over 26 ministries and departments, promoting coordinated action across sanitation, water access, education, women’s empowerment, and livelihoods.
The mission follows a lifecycle-based, preventive approach, focusing particularly on the first 1,000 days from conception to early childhood, a critical period for physical and cognitive development.
Additionally, Poshan Vatikas established at Anganwadi centres, schools, and community lands promote dietary diversity and access to locally sourced nutritious food, including fruits, vegetables, and medicinal plants.
