A police team from Salboni Police Station in West Midnapore reached the Kolkata residence of Trinamool Congress General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee in the early hours of Saturday.
A Deputy Superintendent of Police supervised the operation with support from personnel of the Central Armed Police Forces.
The officers arrived at Banerjee’s residence on Kalighat Road in south Kolkata at around 3 AM. A separate team from the local Kalighat Police Station also reached the location shortly afterwards.
Police personnel repeatedly called at the entrance of the residence after arriving at the spot. When no one responded, the team remained stationed outside the property for more than two hours.
Officials sought assistance from personnel of the State Disaster Management Department during the operation. With their help, the locked entrance was opened, allowing the police team to enter the premises and conduct the search.
The operation reportedly sought to locate Sumit Roy, Banerjee’s executive assistant, who remains untraceable.
Salboni Police Station is investigating Roy in connection with a registered case.
Authorities did not reveal further information regarding the nature of the case.
Sources familiar with the development said investigators suspected that Roy could be present at the residence.
After learning about the search operation, former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee arrived at the location from her nearby residence on Harish Chatterjee Street.
The search continued for more than two hours before the police and security personnel concluded the operation and departed.
Following the search, Abhishek Banerjee alleged that security personnel had entered the property by breaking the lock on the main gate. He accused the authorities of exceeding their powers during the operation.
Banerjee will likely face questioning by investigating agencies on three successive days. The CID has summoned him on June 14 and again on June 16, while the Enforcement Directorate has summoned him on June 15 in connection with separate investigations currently underway.
