Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal also praised the programme and stated that rooftops across the country were transforming into centres of energy generation. He emphasised that the scheme was empowering families and accelerating self-reliance through renewable energy adoption.
The government launched the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana in 2024 as a demand-driven initiative for residential consumers with grid-connected electricity access.
Citizens can apply for rooftop solar installations through the scheme’s national portal.
Government figures revealed that authorities utilised Rs 14,585.29 crore under the scheme during FY26 until March 5, compared to Rs 7,822.92 crore during FY25.
Officials estimated that installing rooftop solar systems across one crore households could generate nearly 1,000 billion units of renewable electricity.
Authorities also projected a reduction of approximately 720 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions over the systems’ 25-year operational lifespan.
Gujarat, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, and Rajasthan currently lead implementation efforts nationwide.
The government additionally continues advancing the National Green Hydrogen Mission to position India as a global production and export hub for green hydrogen and related technologies.
