The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, launched on 13 February 2024, has achieved rooftop solar installations in 23,96,497 households, representing 23.96 per cent of the one-crore target set for FY 2026-27.
Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy, Shripad Yesso Naik, informed Parliament that the scheme has received 53,54,099 applications nationwide, with 19,17,698 systems already installed.
The initiative aims to provide clean energy solutions to one crore residential households. It supplies up to 300 units of free electricity per month through rooftop solar systems.
This effort forms part of India’s broader push to expand renewable energy access and reduce dependence on conventional power sources.
The PM Surya Ghar scheme is demand-driven. It allows any residential consumer with a grid-connected electricity connection from a local DISCOM to apply via the National Portal.
The portal facilitates registration, subsidy disbursal directly into bank accounts, and simplified vendor registration to ensure qualified providers are available nationwide.
The government has implemented several measures to accelerate adoption. These include collateral-free loans from nationalised banks at concessional interest rates of 6 per cent per annum for 10 years and a simplified regulatory approval process.
Technical feasibility requirements have been waived, and auto load enhancement has been introduced up to 10 kW to streamline installations.
Net Metering and Vendor Support
Net metering agreements have been incorporated into the National Portal application process. This allows households to feed surplus electricity back into the grid.
This integration ensures a seamless experience for consumers and promotes efficient energy utilisation.
Simplified vendor registration guarantees adequate availability of qualified service providers, further accelerating the scheme’s reach.
For the current fiscal year, the government aims to cover 35 lakh households under the scheme.
The government designed PM Surya Ghar, with a total outlay of ₹75,021 crore, to expand rooftop solar capacity across India and support residential energy self-sufficiency.
The scheme also aims to advance the country’s renewable energy goals.
Minister Naik highlighted that the initiative is progressing well. He added that the government is continuously improving online processes, financial support mechanisms, and regulatory procedures to achieve the target on schedule.
By enabling widespread rooftop solar adoption, PM Surya Ghar provides households with sustainable, cost-effective electricity while reducing carbon emissions.
The scheme reflects India’s commitment to green energy and aims to empower citizens with reliable, renewable energy solutions. It marks a major step in the country’s transition toward a cleaner energy future.
