On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called on voters in Tamil Nadu to take part actively in the ongoing Assembly elections, with a special appeal to young people and women.

Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “As Tamil Nadu votes in the Assembly elections, I call upon all voters to take part enthusiastically in this sacred duty of democracy. I urge the youth and the women of Tamil Nadu in particular to come out and vote in record numbers.”

Polling began early in the day across all 234 constituencies in the state. More than 5.7 crore voters are eligible to cast their ballots, choosing from 4,023 candidates in what is being seen as a closely fought contest.

The election features multiple major players, including the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-led alliance and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-led bloc. It also includes Naam Tamilar Katchi and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam. This makes the race highly competitive across regions.

Voters arrived at polling stations in large numbers from the morning. Several districts reported a steady turnout.

Election officials said they have put arrangements in place to ensure a smooth process. These include security deployment and monitoring systems at booths.

Authorities have also introduced measures such as webcasting and flying squads to maintain compliance with election rules. Special provisions have been made to assist elderly and differently-abled voters.

The result will be decided when votes are counted on May 4. This will determine who forms the next government in the state.
