Prime Minister Narendra Modi has written to floor leaders of all parties in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, urging unanimous support for the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam to enable women’s reservation in legislatures before the 2029 elections.
In his letter, PM Modi stressed the importance of passing the legislation during the upcoming special session of Parliament beginning April 16, describing it as a major step towards strengthening democratic values and inclusive governance.
The Prime Minister highlighted the crucial role of women in nation-building, stating that India’s progress depends on greater participation, leadership, and decision-making opportunities for women.
Recalling the developments of 2023, PM Modi noted the broad political consensus that led to support for the legislation, calling it a historic moment in India’s parliamentary journey and a reflection of collective commitment.
The Prime Minister added that the government had undertaken extensive consultations with political parties and experts before arriving at its current position on implementing the law.
According to the Prime Minister, the time has come to implement the Act in its true spirit, ensuring that the 2029 Lok Sabha and Assembly elections are conducted with women’s reservation in place, thereby strengthening democratic institutions and public trust.
Calling for unity, PM Modi urged all parties to rise above political differences and support the amendment, describing it as a responsibility towards women and future generations. He expressed confidence that Parliament would come together to achieve this milestone, adding that members contributing to its passage would take pride in being part of a historic transformation.
The proposed amendment seeks to base implementation on the 2011 Census rather than waiting for future census exercises, ensuring timely enforcement before the next general elections.
