On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi commemorated the Jayanti of Adi Shankaracharya, recalling his lasting influence on Indian spiritual thought and values.

Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “On the sacred occasion of Adi Shankaracharya Jayanti, paying homage to one of India’s greatest spiritual luminaries. His profound teachings, thoughts and philosophy of Advaita Vedanta continue to guide innumerable people globally. He emphasised harmony, discipline and the oneness of all existence.”

“His efforts to revitalise spiritual thought and establish spiritual centres across the nation remain a lasting inspiration. May his wisdom continue to illuminate our path and strengthen our commitment to truth, compassion and collective well-being,” the post further read.

Adi Shankaracharya, born in Kalady, is regarded as a central figure in consolidating the doctrine of non-dualism within Hindu philosophy.

Renouncing worldly life at an early age, he travelled widely and authored influential commentaries on texts such as the Upanishads, the Bhagavad Gita and the Brahma Sutras.

Adi Shankaracharya’s teachings established a cohesive spiritual framework centred on the unity of the individual self and universal consciousness.

To sustain this tradition, he, however, founded four principal monastic institutions across India, located in Sringeri, Dwarka, Puri and Jyotirmath.
