On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Christian Stocker on his swearing-in as Austria’s Federal Chancellor. He also expressed his eagerness to strengthen bilateral ties between India and Austria.
Stocker officially took charge after his swearing-in ceremony at Hofburg on Monday, marking the end of Austria’s political uncertainty.
He takes office as part of a newly formed coalition government comprising the Austrian People’s Party (OVP), the Social Democrats, and the liberal Neos party, with challenging negotiations lie ahead.
Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “Warmly congratulate H.E. Christian Stocker on being sworn in as the Federal Chancellor of Austria. The India-Austria Enhanced Partnership is poised to make steady progress in the years to come.”
Highlighting India’s commitment to deepening cooperation, the Prime Minister added, “I look forward to working with you to take our mutually beneficial cooperation to unprecedented heights.”
India and Austria have shared diplomatic ties since 1949, celebrating 70 years of partnership in 2019.
Over the decades, both nations have strengthened their engagement through high-level visits and collaborations.
In September 2021, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla visited Vienna to attend the 5th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament.
Earlier, in February 2019, Karin Kneissl, Austria’s then-Minister of Foreign Affairs, visited India to commemorate the 70th anniversary of diplomatic ties, meeting with her Indian counterpart, Sushma Swaraj.
With Stocker now leading Austria, both countries will likely further build on their longstanding diplomatic and economic partnership.
