Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Thiruvananthapuram on Friday to an enthusiastic public reception, underlining the political significance of his visit following the Bharatiya Janata Party’s historic victory in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation elections.
This marks the first time the BJP has captured a municipal corporation in Kerala, ending 45 years of uninterrupted CPI(M)-led Left Front rule.
At the airport, Kerala Governor Rajendra V Arlekar, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, and senior leaders, including top BJP functionaries, received Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
From early morning, thousands of BJP workers and supporters lined the roads from the airport to Putharikandam Maidan, transforming the capital’s arterial routes into a vibrant display of party flags and slogans.
At a public function at Putharikandam Maidan, Prime Minister Modi will inaugurate several Central government projects.
The programme will underscore the BJP’s governance-and-development narrative in the state following its landmark civic breakthrough.
The Prime Minister will also flag off Amrit Bharat trains and lay the foundation stone for the Innovation, Technology and Entrepreneurship Hub, signalling a strong focus on infrastructure development, innovation, and employment generation.
Significantly, PM Modi is likely to announce a high-speed rail corridor for Kerala.
Sources suggest the project may be based on an alternative proposal put forward by E Sreedharan, distinct from the controversial SilverLine project.
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation is expected to prepare the Detailed Project Report and oversee construction.
After the official engagements, the Prime Minister will attend a BJP-organised public meeting, with over 25,000 workers expected to participate.
BJP state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar noted that the visit fulfils the party’s promise of PM Modi’s visit within 45 days of assuming power in the Corporation.
