Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to undertake a politically charged three-day visit to Tamil Nadu from January 13 to 15, with plans to celebrate Pongal alongside farmers, a move the BJP views as a decisive outreach to rural voters ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.
Party sources say the visit blends cultural symbolism with electoral strategy, placing agriculture, Tamil identity, and alliance-building at the centre of the BJP’s southern push.
Senior BJP leaders confirmed that the Prime Minister’s schedule is being aligned with Pongal, the state’s most significant harvest festival.
If finalised, it will mark the first time PM Modi participates directly in Pongal celebrations with farmers in Tamil Nadu, reinforcing the party’s attempt to connect agrarian welfare with cultural pride.
The leadership believes the optics of the Prime Minister standing with farmers during a traditional festival will send a strong political message across rural constituencies.
According to the proposed itinerary, PM Modi will attend the closing ceremony of Kashi Tamil Sangamam 4.0 in Rameswaram, an initiative designed to deepen civilisational and cultural links between Tamil Nadu and Kashi.
The programme has become a key platform for projecting the BJP’s narrative of cultural continuity and national integration, especially in states where regional identity remains politically dominant.
The Prime Minister will also take part in the concluding event of ‘Thamizhagam Thalai Nimira Thamizhanin Payanam’. BJP Tamil Nadu president Nainar Nagenthran leads the statewide outreach campaign.
The party plans to hold the event in Pudukkottai. It aims to mobilise grassroots cadres and amplify the BJP’s Tamil-centric messaging.
Culture Farming Politics Alliance Elections
With Assembly elections approaching, the visit is also expected to coincide with crucial alliance developments. BJP insiders say the National Democratic Alliance in Tamil Nadu could take a more concrete shape before Pongal.
Several regional parties are reportedly in advanced talks to join the coalition, including the Pattali Makkal Katchi, Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam, Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam, and expelled AIADMK leader O Panneerselvam.
Sources say VK Sasikala, a close associate of former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, is actively holding discussions with the NDA.
While she remains barred from contesting elections, party insiders suggest she could play an organisational role to consolidate support for the alliance.
During his visit, PM Modi will hold closed-door meetings with NDA leaders. He will finalise seat-sharing arrangements, campaign themes, and coordination mechanisms for the 2026 polls.
BJP leaders see the visit as an inflexion point that combines cultural outreach, farmer engagement, and alliance consolidation into a single political narrative.
Meanwhile, Nainar Nagenthran remains in Delhi for consultations with the central leadership as preparations intensify.
Party strategists believe PM Modi’s Pongal participation could redefine the BJP’s engagement with Tamil Nadu by fusing tradition, governance, and electoral ambition into a powerful campaign moment.
