G20 Presidency (2023)
India hosted the G20 Presidency in 2023 under the theme ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future’.
PM Modi prioritised the concerns of the Global South, focusing on food and energy security, climate action, and equitable development.
India also initiated the Voice of Global South Summit, offering a platform for emerging economies to contribute to global discourse.
PM Modi called for reforms in international institutions to better reflect 21st-century realities.
BRICS and South-South Cooperation
India continues to play a significant role within BRICS, the bloc of emerging economies.
At the 2025 BRICS Summit in Brazil, PM Modi emphasised climate responsibility, South-South cooperation, and sustainable development. He also reiterated India’s push for reforming global governance to reduce inequalities and strengthen the voice of developing nations.
Strengthening the Quad
Under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, India has become a pillar of the Quad alliance alongside the United States, Japan, and Australia.
At the 2024 Quad Leaders’ Summit, PM Modi reiterated India’s commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific, focusing on security, technology collaboration, and climate resilience.
India and the United States have deepened their Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership under PM Modi.
Bilateral cooperation spans defence, advanced technology, and trade. Key initiatives include collaboration in quantum computing, 5G and 6G development, and co-development of defence platforms.
Despite recent trade tensions, including a US-imposed 50% tariff on certain Indian goods—expected to impact India’s GDP by 0.5–0.6% in 2025—both nations remain committed to dialogue and resolution.
Vaccine Maitri: A Global Lifeline
India’s Vaccine Maitri initiative, launched during the COVID-19 pandemic, was a significant act of global solidarity.
Since January 2021, India has provided over 30 crore vaccine doses to 99 countries and two UN bodies—1.51 crore as gifts and 5.2 crore through the COVAX programme.
India-Russia Strategic Partnership
India and Russia have sustained a robust strategic relationship.
The 2021 2+2 Dialogue marked a milestone in defence and diplomatic cooperation.
Joint efforts now include co-production of defence equipment such as the S-400 missile system, T-90 tanks, Su-30 MKI jets, and BrahMos missiles.
AI Action Summit in Paris
In February 2025, PM Modi co-chaired the AI Action Summit in Paris with French President Emmanuel Macron.
The summit focused on responsible and ethical AI development, aligning technology with democratic values.
Events included Science Days and a Cultural Weekend, bringing together global leaders, tech experts, and policy-makers.
