Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Monday commended Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s role in leading a new revolution through biofuels in India.
His remarks came as Namibia officially joined the Global Biofuel Alliance (GBA), an initiative championed by India to promote clean and sustainable energy alternatives worldwide.
Celebrating Namibia’s inclusion, Puri stated, “India’s vision for clean energy and the continued expansion of the Global Biofuel Alliance highlight PM Modi’s farsighted approach guided by the principle of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, the world is one family.”
Puri explained that biofuels, which are derived from agricultural waste, spoiled grains, and household organic material, serve as a clean and environmentally friendly source of energy.
According to him, biofuel is not just an alternative energy but a powerful vehicle for inclusive growth.
He further emphasised that PM Modi’s push for biofuels is fostering a wave of development across the country.
“From villages to urban centres, green fuel is improving lives, generating new jobs, and reshaping our energy landscape,” Puri noted in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

Boosting rural income & employment
Significantly, Puri underlined how the biofuel initiative is transforming rural economies.
“Alongside increasing farmer incomes, the development of this fuel is creating new employment opportunities, especially in the countryside,” he added.
India’s ethanol blending programme has seen rapid progress. In 2014, the blending rate stood at just 1.4 per cent.
As of 2025, it has reached 20 per cent. This leap reflects India’s growing capabilities and commitment to sustainable energy.
India has now become the third-largest producer of biofuels globally. Official data show that ethanol blending has brought multiple benefits: increased income for farmers, especially those cultivating sugarcane, rural job creation, and a significant reduction in carbon emissions, equivalent to planting 17.5 crore trees.
In addition, the country has saved around ₹85,000 crore in foreign exchange, thanks to the reduction in fossil fuel imports.
Public sector undertakings such as Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum, and Hindustan Petroleum have taken a leading role in implementing ethanol and petrol blends across the nation.
Their efforts are instrumental in realising India’s clean fuel vision.
India’s biofuel movement, led by PM Modi and supported by global partnerships, continues to position the country as a leader in green energy.
As more nations join the Global Biofuel Alliance, India’s model offers a roadmap for sustainable development rooted in innovation and inclusivity.
