Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent roundtable with a dozen Indian artificial intelligence startups has signalled the coming of age of an ecosystem that has been quietly evolving for years and is now poised to reshape sectors ranging from agriculture to healthcare, a report said on Saturday.
According to the report by India Narrative, the interaction underscored India’s growing capability to position itself as an “AI superpower,” powered by homegrown innovation, scale and data.
By 2030, artificial intelligence is projected to add $500 billion to India’s GDP, creating millions of jobs across data annotation, model training and deployment. The report noted that this economic potential places AI at the centre of India’s long-term growth strategy.
Held weeks before the India AI Impact Summit in February, the roundtable showcased indigenous AI models and applications spanning healthcare, agriculture, education and regional-language services. Startups demonstrated tools capable of diagnosing diseases such as tuberculosis and diabetes with unprecedented accuracy.
Others highlighted crop yield prediction tools, pest detection systems and adaptive learning platforms, offering solutions to farmers’ challenges while helping mitigate the impacts of climate change.
Data And Linguistic Diversity As A Competitive Edge
With more than 900 million internet users generating petabytes of data daily, India provides fertile ground for training robust AI models, the report said. Indian startups are also pioneering multilingual AI systems that can understand Hindi, Tamil, Bengali and other Indian languages, making technology accessible to non-English speakers.
This linguistic diversity, the report noted, gives India a competitive advantage and enables the export of AI solutions to other Global South nations facing similar language barriers.
India AI Impact Summit in Focus
The India AI Impact Summit, scheduled for February 15–20, will bring together international stakeholders for discussions on governance, standards and collaboration. Featuring keynotes, policy panels and expert roundtables, the summit will showcase 12 qualified Indian startups working in areas such as healthcare and multilingual technology.
The exposure is expected to attract foreign investment and talent inflows, accelerating India’s push towards a $1 trillion digital economy by 2030.
The report highlighted the role of the India AI Mission, launched in 2024 with $1.2 billion in funding, in democratising access to computing resources, datasets and talent development.
It added that the National AI Portal has provided open-source datasets, while partnerships with global tech giants have ensured access to high-performance computing infrastructure. Together, these initiatives are helping lay the foundation for India’s next phase of AI-led growth.
