Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be on a two-day visit to Assam on January 17 and 18, during which he will likely take part in prominent cultural celebrations and development initiatives, officials said on Friday.
On Saturday, at around 6 PM, the Prime Minister will attend a grand traditional Bodo cultural programme at Sarusajai Stadium in Guwahati.
The centrepiece of the event will be ‘Bagurumba Dohou 2026’, a large-scale cultural showcase highlighting the rich heritage of the Bodo community.
More than 10,000 Bodo artistes are likely to perform the Bagurumba dance in a single synchronised presentation.
Participants from 81 Assembly constituencies across 23 districts of Assam are likely to take part, making it one of the largest cultural performances ever organised in the state.
Cultural Significance of Bagurumba
Bagurumba, a signature folk dance of the Bodo community, draws inspiration from nature and sees young women perform it, accompanied by men playing musical instruments.
The dance symbolises blooming flowers and harmony between humans and nature, with graceful movements inspired by butterflies, birds, leaves and flowers.
The dance holds deep cultural significance, representing peace, fertility, joy and collective harmony, and remains closely associated with festivals such as Bwisagu, the Bodo New Year, and Domasi.
On Sunday, at around 11 AM, Prime Minister Modi will visit Kaliabor to perform the Bhoomi Pujan for the Kaziranga Elevated Corridor Project, a major infrastructure initiative valued at over ₹6,950 crore.
The 86-km project, officially known as the four-laning of the Kaliabor–Numaligarh section of National Highway 715, has been designed as an environmentally sensitive National Highway project. It includes a 35-km elevated wildlife corridor passing through Kaziranga National Park, along with 21 km of bypasses and 30 km of widening of the existing highway.
The project aims to enhance connectivity across the Nagaon, Karbi Anglong and Golaghat districts while ensuring the free movement of wildlife and reducing human-animal conflict.
During the programme, the Prime Minister will also flag off two new Amrit Bharat Express trains, the Guwahati (Kamakhya)–Rohtak service and the Dibrugarh–Lucknow (Gomti Nagar) service, further strengthening rail connectivity between the Northeast and northern India.
