South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi are gearing up to deepen their countries’ partnership during the upcoming G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg, High Commissioner Anil Sooklal.
Their bilateral meeting promises to deliver fresh momentum across trade, security, culture, and people‑to‑people engagement.
The G20 Summit, scheduled for November 22-23 in Johannesburg, provides a high-stakes platform.
According to Sooklal, PM Modi and President Ramaphosa will review the current strength of bilateral ties.
They will also explore new growth areas, including security cooperation, cultural exchange, and citizen connectivity.
India and South Africa share more than economic interests; they share a profound, historical bond.
Sooklal pointed out that India was among the first nations to support South Africa’s anti-apartheid struggle.
Since South Africa became a democracy in 1994, bilateral relations have grown steadily.
Today, India ranks as one of South Africa’s most important global partners and its third-largest trading partner.
Their cooperation spans bilateral trade, multilateral diplomacy, and vibrant cultural interaction.
Looking ahead, the two leaders are expected to drive deeper collaboration in defence and security.
They will also promote stronger people-to-people ties, leveraging cultural diplomacy, sports, and educational linkages.
Investment flows and trade expansion are at the forefront, as both countries mark culture and sport as pillars of their shared development strategy.
Sooklal described the India-South Africa partnership as rooted in shared history and mutual values.
“As leading countries of the Global South, we both emerged from exploitation and colonialism,” he said. “Now, we work together in multilateral forums such as BRICS and IBSA-our three-nation platform with Brazil, remains a powerful voice for Global South solidarity.”
He added that India and South Africa collaborate closely on climate change, the UN, and WTO matters.
These shared multilateral commitments augment their bilateral ambitions.
Ramaphosa echoed this spirit of partnership when he said in Kliptown that South Africa is ready to host world leaders and pull off a successful G20 Summit.
With such deep historical ties and a forward-looking agenda, the Modi‑Ramaphosa meeting could mark a major leap in India‑South Africa relations.
