Prime Minister Modi will lead the country’s 12th International Day of Yoga celebrations from Kolkata’s Red Road on Sunday, with thousands of participants expected to join the flagship event organised under the theme ‘Yoga for Healthy Ageing’.

The programme will focus on the role of Yoga in supporting physical fitness, mental well-being and healthy lifestyles across all age groups.

Around 35,000 participants will likely perform the Common Yoga Protocol (CYP) alongside the Prime Minister at the venue.

The celebrations will also extend across Kolkata, where nearly 10 lakh people are likely to participate in synchronised Yoga sessions at multiple locations, making it one of the country’s largest International Day of Yoga observances.

The nationwide event will be complemented by large-scale participation across India and overseas.

Prataprao Jadhav, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Ayush and Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, said more than 210 Indian Missions abroad, working in collaboration with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), will organise Yoga Day programmes at nearly 2,500 locations around the world.

Jadhav noted that Yoga has evolved into a global movement for health and wellness since the United Nations General Assembly adopted India’s proposal to observe the International Day of Yoga in 2014.

The annual event has since attracted growing international participation, reflecting the practice’s expanding global reach.

Yoga Sangam Initiative

Ahead of this year’s celebrations, the Ministry of Ayush’s Yoga Sangam Portal crossed six lakh organisational registrations, with enrolments continuing to increase.

The Ministry said the milestone demonstrates rising enthusiasm for the Yoga Sangam initiative, which encourages institutions, communities and organisations to participate in synchronised Yoga sessions based on the Common Yoga Protocol.

Through the initiative, participating organisations will virtually connect with the national celebration led by Prime Minister Modi.

The Ministry described the response as an indication of unprecedented public engagement in a collective effort to promote health, wellness and holistic living through Yoga.
