Prime Minister Narendra Modi will virtually flag off two new high-tech trains – Amrit Bharat Express and Namo Bharat Rapid Rail – during his visit to Bihar on 24 April.
These new services are likely to significantly upgrade the state’s railway infrastructure.
The introduction of these trains, however, aligns with PM Modi’s broader initiative to modernise Indian Railways.
Bihar will now feature all three of the Prime Minister’s flagship train models – Vande Bharat, Amrit Bharat, and Namo Bharat – making it a key hub in the evolving rail network.
According to Dilip Kumar, Executive Director of Information and Publication at the Ministry of Railways, the Namo Bharat Rapid Rail will begin service between Jayanagar and Patna, marking its second operational route after Ahmedabad-Bhuj.
The train, built under the Make-in-India initiative, however, features 16 air-conditioned coaches and a seating capacity of over 2,000.
This upgraded model includes:
- Kavach automatic protection system,
- CCTV in all coaches,
- Fire safety systems,
- Emergency communication units,
- Modern seating and USB charging ports,
- Vacuum toilets with accessible features,
- Automatic doors and dust-proof gangways,
- Route maps in every coach, and
- Dual driving cabins for engine-free reversal
Kumar also shared that the Amrit Bharat Express will connect Saharsa in Bihar to Mumbai’s Lokmanya Tilak Terminus, becoming the third train of its kind in India.
Previous routes include Darbhanga – Anand Vihar and Malda Town – Bengaluru.
Operating at speeds of up to 130 km/h, this non-air-conditioned sleeper train offers affordable long-distance travel with upgrades like:
- Push-pull technology
- Foldable snack tables, mobile and bottle holders
- Illuminated flooring and advanced seating
- Modern automatic toilets
- Emergency features and onboard wheel monitoring systems
In addition to these trains, the Prime Minister will also launch new passenger train services between Pipra and Saharsa.
These will link newly constructed rail lines, including Supaul – Pipra and Samastipur – Saharsa via Vithan and Alouli.
Three additional rail line projects will be dedicated:
- Supaul–Pipra
- Khagaria–Alouli
- Hasanpur–Vithan
Passenger operations will start on these routes to boost regional connectivity.
With multiple Vande Bharat Express trains already in operation and the addition of Amrit Bharat and Namo Bharat services, Bihar is, however, entering a new phase of railway modernisation.
These developments aim to offer safer, faster, and more comfortable travel options, especially benefiting residents in North Bihar and the Mithila region, while supporting the broader vision of a self-reliant India.
