Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch Mission Mausam on Tuesday during the 150th Foundation Day of the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The event will take place at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. PM Modi will also address the gathering.
Mission Mausam aims to make India a weather-ready and climate-smart nation. The mission will develop advanced weather technologies, including high-resolution atmospheric systems, next-generation radars, satellites, and high-performance computers. It will improve understanding of weather and climate processes and provide accurate air quality data. The mission will also help plan long-term strategies for weather management and climate adaptation.
PM Modi will release the IMD Vision-2047 document, which outlines plans for tackling extreme weather and climate change. The roadmap includes strategies for improving forecasting, managing climate impacts, and adapting to changing conditions.
The Union Cabinet, chaired by PM Modi, approved Mission Mausam in September 2024. The project has a budget of ₹2,000 crore for two years. The IMD, the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, and the National Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting will implement the programme.
Mission Mausam will benefit agriculture, disaster management, defence, aviation, tourism, and energy. It will enhance data-driven decisions in urban planning, transport, shipping, and environmental monitoring. The programme will better prepare India to handle extreme weather events and the effects of climate change.
IMD’s 150th Foundation Day celebrations include events and workshops. These activities highlight IMD’s role in building climate resilience and delivering weather services. The celebrations also showcase how government agencies contribute to climate preparedness.
Mission Mausam will strengthen India’s ability to tackle weather and climate challenges, ensuring a sustainable and resilient future.
