Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate an advanced semiconductor Assembly, Testing, Marking and Packaging facility in Sanand, Gujarat, on Saturday, in a major boost to India’s chip manufacturing ambitions.

Micron Technology’s Indian arm, Micron Semiconductor Technology India Pvt Ltd, has set up the unit with an investment of Rs 22,516 crore. The project marks a significant step under the National Semiconductor Mission to build a robust domestic semiconductor ecosystem.

The Sanand facility will undertake assembly, testing, marking and packaging of semiconductor memory products, including solid state drives and RAM-type DRAM and NAND devices for global markets.

Around 2,000 employees are currently working at the plant, with direct employment expected to expand to nearly 5,000 in the coming years.

Inclusive Hiring

Company representatives said the facility employs People with Disabilities as operators and technicians, with opportunities open to individuals with relevant skills.

The project, however, reached completion within the planned timeline, with the Gujarat government positioning the state as a key hub for semiconductor manufacturing in India.

Micron Technology President and CEO Sanjay Mehrotra highlighted the growing importance of memory and storage in emerging technologies, particularly Artificial Intelligence.

He noted that AI systems depend heavily on robust memory and storage solutions to function effectively, and demand for advanced memory products is rising as AI applications deliver faster, real-time responses.

The semiconductor process feeding into the ATMP facility begins with sand, from which the process extracts pure silicon and shapes it into cylindrical ingots. The ingots are then sliced into wafers, where electronic patterns are imprinted and layered through photolithography to create transistors and memory structures.

The process cuts the wafers into individual chips and sends them to Sanand for assembly, performance and reliability testing, marking and packaging.

The plant will process advanced DRAM and NAND wafers manufactured at Micron’s global factories and convert them into finished memory products for international markets, supporting growing global demand for AI-driven memory and storage solutions.
