PM Narendra Modi will embark on a two-day state visit to the Maldives starting July 25, during which he will inaugurate several developmental projects and hold high-level talks with Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu.
PM Modi to Inaugurate Development Projects During Maldives Visit
According to an official statement from the Maldives President’s Office on Sunday, PM Modi and President Muizzu will engage in high-level discussions focusing on key bilateral and regional issues.
The talks will be followed by the joint inauguration of multiple developmental projects and the signing of several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) to enhance cooperation across areas of mutual interest.
This will be Prime Minister Modi’s first visit to the island nation since beginning his third consecutive term in office.
The visit underlines India’s continued commitment to strengthening its ties with the Maldives.
The visit holds special significance as it coincides with the 60th anniversary of the Maldives’ independence and the establishment of diplomatic relations between India and the Maldives.
Deep Historical and Cultural Links
India and the Maldives share deep-rooted ethnic, linguistic, cultural, religious, and commercial ties that date back centuries.
India was among the first countries to recognise the Maldives after its independence in 1965 and quickly established diplomatic relations.
India’s ties with the Maldives have historically been cordial, multi-dimensional, and free of politically contentious issues.
The Maldives resolved the lone territorial dispute over Minicoy Island by signing the 1976 Maritime Boundary Treaty and recognised Minicoy as an integral part of India.
India’s swift military assistance during the 1988 coup attempt in the Maldives laid the foundation for long-lasting trust between the two nations.
The timely withdrawal of Indian troops reassured the Maldives of India’s non-interventionist approach.
India’s Consistent Humanitarian Support
India has consistently extended timely humanitarian aid to the Maldives, being the first to respond during the 2004 tsunami and the Male water crisis in 2014.
These actions have highlighted India’s unique geographic advantage and its capacity to assist the Maldives in times of crisis, a fact widely acknowledged by both the Maldivian government and its citizens.
PM Modi’s visit aims to reinforce the strong and enduring partnership between the two countries, especially at a time when regional dynamics call for deeper strategic cooperation.
