Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Grand International Exposition of Sacred Piprahwa Relics associated with Bhagwan Buddha at the Rai Pithora Cultural Complex in Delhi on Saturday, January 3.
Announcing the event on X on Friday, the Prime Minister said the day would be especially meaningful for those interested in history, culture and the ideals of Bhagwan Buddha. He said the exposition, titled ‘The Light & the Lotus: Relics of the Awakened One’, will be inaugurated at 11 AM.
PM Modi highlighted the importance of the exhibition, saying it brings together sacred Piprahwa relics repatriated after more than a century, along with authentic relics and archaeological materials preserved at the National Museum in New Delhi and the Indian Museum in Kolkata.

Discovered in 1898, the Piprahwa relics hold a pivotal place in the archaeological study of early Buddhism.
According to an official statement, they are among the earliest and most historically significant relic deposits directly associated with Bhagwan Buddha.
Archaeological evidence links the Piprahwa site to ancient Kapilavastu, widely believed to be where Gautam Buddha spent his early life before renunciation.
As a result, scholars consider the relics invaluable for understanding the historical and spiritual foundations of Buddhism.
The exposition reflects India’s enduring civilisational connection with the teachings of Buddha. It also underscores the Prime Minister’s commitment to preserving and promoting the country’s rich spiritual and cultural heritage.
Officials said sustained government efforts, institutional collaboration and innovative public–private partnerships made the recent repatriation of the relics possible.
The exhibition also highlights India’s ongoing endeavour to reclaim and preserve culturally significant artefacts.
Organised thematically, the exposition features a reconstructed interpretive model inspired by the iconic Sanchi stupa at its centre.
This central installation brings together authentic relics from national collections along with the recently repatriated gems.
The exhibition is further organised into thematic sections that trace the spiritual, artistic and historical dimensions of Buddhism across time and geography. Thematic sections include:
- Piprahwa Revisited,
- Vignettes of the Life of Buddha,
- Intangible in the Tangible: The Aesthetic Language of Buddhist Teachings,
- Expansion of Buddhist Art and Ideals Beyond Borders, and
- Repatriation of Cultural Artefacts: The Continuing Endeavour
Together, these sections provide a layered narrative that connects archaeology, philosophy, art and contemporary cultural discourse.
To deepen public engagement and understanding, organisers support the exposition with an extensive audio-visual experience.
Visitors will have access to immersive films, digital reconstructions, interpretive projections and multimedia presentations.
The exposition, however, brings together history, archaeology and art to offer visitors a comprehensive understanding of the legacy of Bhagwan Buddha and the traditions shaped by his teachings. Key elements include:
