PM Modi To Inaugurate First Phase Of AIIMS Madurai On February 28

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the first phase of the AIIMS Madurai campus on February 28. The event marks a major step for one of Tamil Nadu’s most discussed healthcare projects.

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences campus stands at Thoppur in the Madurai district.

Authorities announced the project ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Since then, land acquisition hurdles and funding constraints delayed execution.

These setbacks turned the project into a recurring political issue between the Centre and the state government.

AIIMS Madurai Executive Director and CEO M Hanumantha Rao said the Prime Minister has confirmed his consent to launch the initial phase during his proposed visit.

Officials stated that the campus is nearing operational readiness after years of slow progress.

Partial services are expected to begin by March. The first phase will, however, allow the institute to operate in a limited yet functional manner.

Students currently enrolled at the temporary AIIMS facility in Ramanathapuram will shift to the permanent Madurai campus as part of this transition.

Authorities plan to begin full academic activities from the 2026-27 academic year.

In the interim, select hospital blocks will open to the public. Basic medical services will also commence, enabling early patient care and institutional presence.

The inauguration assumes added political importance ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections scheduled later this year.

The AIIMS project has featured prominently in electoral discourse.

The ruling DMK has repeatedly accused the Centre of announcing the institute without ensuring timely delivery.

Chief Minister MK Stalin recently reiterated criticism over prolonged delays. He argued that the state deserved faster implementation of critical healthcare infrastructure.

Party sources said Prime Minister Modi’s Madurai visit will include the launch of other completed development projects. He is also expected to attend a National Democratic Alliance public meeting with state allies.

Bharatiya Janata Party leaders believe the inauguration could generate significant political momentum for the NDA. They see it as evidence of the Centre’s focus on healthcare expansion and regional development.

Officials have yet to finalise the Prime Minister’s detailed itinerary.

The Madurai programme will, however, attract wide public attention and strong political interest across Tamil Nadu.
