Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the Delhi–Dehradun Expressway on Tuesday, a major road project aimed at improving connectivity between the national capital and Uttarakhand.
Before the launch, Prime Minister Modi will visit the Dat Kali Temple to offer prayers as part of the day’s schedule.
The expressway was developed at an estimated cost of about Rs 12,000 crore. It spans roughly 210 kilometres and begins near Akshardham Temple. It runs through parts of Uttar Pradesh, including Baghpat, Baraut, Muzaffarnagar, Shamli and Saharanpur, before reaching Dehradun.
A connecting route will also link the highway to Haridwar and the wider Char Dham network.
One of the key benefits of the project is a significant reduction in travel time. The journey between Delhi and Dehradun, which currently takes around six hours by road, is expected to be cut to nearly two and a half hours once the expressway becomes operational.
The improved road is also likely to compete with other travel options. Rail services such as the Vande Bharat Express and Shatabdi Express take longer overall. Air travel has a shorter flight duration. It often involves extended transit and waiting times.
Built for smooth and high-speed travel, the corridor includes multiple interchanges, bridges and rail overbridges.
Facilities such as rest areas, fuel stations, food courts and other amenities are being developed along the route to support travellers.
Environmental considerations have been factored into the design, particularly in stretches passing through Rajaji National Park.
An elevated section has been constructed to reduce disturbance to wildlife, along with dedicated animal crossings and underpasses.
The expressway is expected to ease traffic on existing routes. It will support tourism, trade and regional development between Delhi and Uttarakhand.
