Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off India’s first hydrogen-powered train from Haryana’s Jind on Friday, marking a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to develop cleaner and more sustainable rail transportation.
The launch places India among a select group of nations exploring hydrogen-powered trains as an alternative to conventional fossil fuel-based rail systems.
The hydrogen-powered train will operate on the Jind-Sonipat route, which has been identified by Indian Railways as the pilot corridor for the project.
The initiative reflects the national transporter’s commitment to innovation, energy efficiency and environmentally sustainable mobility while supporting India’s clean energy transition and net-zero carbon emission goals.
To support the project, Indian Railways has established an indigenous hydrogen storage and refuelling facility at Jind.
The Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) has granted the necessary licence for the storage and dispensing of compressed hydrogen gas, enabling safe operation of the train.
The facility also includes a hydrogen compression system, technical support infrastructure, essential spare parts and a standby compressor to ensure reliable and uninterrupted refuelling.
Hydrogen fuel cell technology generates electricity through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, producing only water vapour as its by-product.
The train emits only water vapour, making it a clean alternative to diesel-powered rail transport.
With the launch, India joins Germany, Japan, China and the United States in exploring hydrogen-powered trains, marking a significant step towards greener railways.
Prime Minister Modi will also virtually inaugurate the redeveloped Tikamgarh railway station under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav will attend the event and launch development projects worth over ₹189 crore while distributing benefits under various government welfare schemes.
