Prime Minister Narendra Modi will join the swearing-in ceremony of the new BJP-led National Democratic Alliance government in Assam on Tuesday.
Chief Minister-designate Himanta Biswa Sarma inspected preparations at the Veterinary College ground in Khanapara, Guwahati, ahead of the event and shared details about the ceremony on Monday. He said the new administration would officially take charge at 11 AM on May 12 in the presence of NDA leaders, party members and supporters from across the state.
While speaking to the media, Himanta Biswa Sarma said several prominent figures from the NDA are expected to attend the oath-taking programme.
Among those likely to be present are Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, BJP president Nitin Nabin and Chief Ministers from various NDA-governed states.
Officials believe the ceremony could become one of the largest political gatherings organised in the Northeast this year.
Officials have tightened security measures in and around Khanapara because of the expected presence of senior political leaders, including the Prime Minister.
Security personnel have installed barricades, planned traffic diversions and deployed multiple layers of protection across the venue area.
Senior police officers reviewed preparedness on Monday, while organisers estimated that thousands of BJP karyakartas from different districts of Assam would attend the programme.
Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the newly formed government would hold its first Cabinet meeting shortly after the swearing-in ceremony concludes. He said the administration would focus on implementing the BJP’s election promises and continuing developmental work across Assam during its next term.
The BJP-led NDA secured a comfortable majority in the recently concluded Assam Assembly elections, enabling Sarma to begin his second consecutive term as Chief Minister.
