New Delhi, Sep 1: Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with medal winners from the Paralympic Games on Sunday, praising their achievements and their contribution to the nation.
PM Modi Commends Medal Winners
In a telephonic conversation, PM Modi congratulated Paris Paralympics medallists Mona Agarwal, Preethi Pal, Manish Narwal, and Rubina Francis. He expressed pride in their performances and achievements.
Avani Lekhara made history by becoming the first Indian to win successive gold medals in the women’s 10m air rifle (SH1) event. The 22-year-old set a new record with 249.7 points, surpassing her Tokyo Games score of 249.6. Lekhara is now the only Indian woman with two Paralympic gold medals.
Other Medal Winners and Future Prospects
Mona Agarwal, a debutant, earned a bronze medal in the women’s 10m air rifle standing SH1 event with a score of 228.7 points. Preethi Pal secured bronze in the women’s 100m race with a personal best time of 14.21 seconds.
Manish Narwal won the silver medal in the Men’s 10m Air Pistol SH1 event. He had previously won gold in the Mixed 50m Pistol event at the Tokyo Paralympics. Shooter Rubina Francis added another bronze medal for India in the Women’s 10m Air Pistol SH1 event.
PM Modi also extended greetings to Avani Lekhara, who was unable to join the conversation due to her ongoing event.
India’s contingent for the Paris Paralympics 2024 is the largest ever, with 84 para-athletes competing in 12 disciplines, an increase from the 9 disciplines in Tokyo Paralympics 2021, where India won a record 19 medals.
